Sneak Peak: New Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The well-known and barely changed boxy exterior of all-new German off-road SUV has been leaked by a German website ahead of the models official reveal at the Detroit Motor Show. Dutch website Auto Week leaked images of the all-new G-Class without camouflage for the first time before the official January 15 reveal. The Mercedes-Benz new G-Glass model, which is set to arrive in Australia around mid-2018, has many highlights included in their new model, including:
– New steel ladder frame
– Aluminium body panels
– Kerb weight reduced by about 160kg
– Torsional stiffness up around 30 per cent
– 20mm wider body
– Independent double-wishbone front suspension
– Redesigned live rear axle
– Air springs and adaptive damping
– New infotainment system with two large 12.3-inch screens
– Digital instruments for premium versions
– Electrical architecture from E-Class and S-Class
– New driver assistance systems including Active Lane Keeping Assist
– Twin-turbo 4.0-litre petrol V8 for G 500 and G 63
– New 2.9-litre inline six-cylinder diesel for G 400d
– New 3.0-litre inline turbo-petrol six with integrated starter/generator to follow for G 350 mild hybrid
– Nine-speed automatic gearboxes across the range
– Same 0.54Cd drag coefficient as before
– Water fording depth increased by 100mm to 700mm
– Improved approach, departure and ramp angles
– Ground clearance up 6mm to 241mm
– G 500 to weigh 2435kg – down from 2595kg
– 3500kg towing capacity remains
– Electromechanical rack-and-pinion to replace recirculating ball steering
– Optional 360-degree camera
