Put the Top Down and Enjoy Australia's Top 10 Most Scenic Drives

What better way to make the most out of your new wheels than on one of the stunning scenic drives that Australia has to offer. With impressive beaches that stretch for miles, vibrant rainforests and buzzing cities – there are so many drives to choose from. We have put together 10 of our favorites, because a car shouldn't just be about driving to and from work, it should be enjoyed!

1. Great Ocean Road, Victoria

This drive is well known for its spectacular view of the ocean, dramatic rock sculptures known as Twelve Apostles, beautiful beaches and when it's time to stretch the legs there are rainforest walks to explore. Once you have finished driving for the day you can even sample some of the local wine at one of the many wineries on offer. Great Ocean Road runs from Allansford to Torquay which then offers easy access to Melbourne. At 224km you can make a number of stops on the route and make it last as many days as you like.

2. Sydney to Melbourne

Following the ocean from Sydney to Melbourne will treat you to a string of coastal towns and villages including Kiama, Milton, Lakes Entrance, Bermagui and Narooma, with wild camping spots, and turquoise lagoons. There’s a strong Aboriginal presence in parts too, as well as perfect fishing spots, birdlife galore, and kangaroos who pose for photographs beside the surf. Make sure you leave a few days for this drive otherwise you will miss out on all there is on offer!

3. Hobart to Freycinet, Tasmania

We recommend a circular journey from the city of Hobart to Freycinet National Park and back again, experience the unforgettable wildlife and beaches along this drive. Our favourite stop is the Freycinet National Park for breathtaking views of the granite mountains and topaz blue waters.

4. The Alpine Way, New South Wales

Nothing beats a stunning Alpine Drive; set off from Jindabyne, New South Wales and up into the hills towards Corryong in Victoria for a road trip with dramatic alpine scenery. You drive through Kosciuszko National Park where the mountains meet the banks of the Snowy River. We don’t recommend doing this drive for enjoyment in the winter months as chains are recommended.

5. Great Alpine Road, Victoria

Another of our favourite alpine scenic drives starts from Wangaratta. You will drive through Mount Buffalo National Park for unique rock formations, waterfalls and horse riding through the eucalypts. On the way back, stop at beautiful Bright for golden trees in Autumn, walks along the pristine Ovens Rover, and a beer from the local brewery.

6. Grand Pacific Drive, New South Wales

The Grand Pacific Drive begins with the views of the Royal National Park and then takes you along a coastal drive to Shoalhaven. The Sea Cliff Bridge is a highlight of this drive, swinging above the striking ocean and dramatic cliff tops above. Jervis Bay is not to be missed as one of the whitest sand beaches in the world at Jervis Bay.

7. Kuranda, Queensland

Make your way from the sticky heat in Cairns towards and experience the cool rainforest air as you drive around the World Heritage-listed rainforest Kuranda. You wont have to listen too hard for to be struck with the humming of millions of cicadas from among huge tree trunks.

8. Gibb River Road, Kimberley Region

A more rough and ready ride for the adventurous type. This is the only 4WD track we have let slip into our top 10 as it is one of the most famous in Australia. The Gibb River Road winds its way past Katherine, Kakadu National Park, and El Questro, offering incredible views of the Kimberley region’s natural geological formations, including Katherine Gorge and Mt Hart. There is even the option to jump on the Gibb River Road’s bright orange paths, regularly driving through large rivers and up dusty hills.

9. Broom to Perth, Western Australia

There are plenty of stunning photo opportunities along the coastal drive from Broom to Perth. from the astonishing natural rock arches in Kalbarri National Park, to the crystal clear Ningaloo Reef and sweeping arid sceneries of Karratha. Monkey Mia is a popular spot where the reefs are incredibly clear and sites of bottle nosed dolphins are a regular occurrence.

10. Cairns to Cape Tribulation, Queensland

This drive through the Daintree Rainforest and past Mossman Gorge is full of vibrant colours and stunning scenery. On this drive you’ll enjoy towering trees and trickling rivers, before driving through the coastal town of Port Douglas with its sandy white beaches and tasty array of restaurants to arrive in ‘the Cape’ where you will see plants that grow nowhere else on earth!
