BLOG: TIPS FOR TOWING YOUR TRAILER INTERSTATE

Follow our handy tips to ensure every driver and passenger is safe on the roads this Christmas...

IN THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY THAT WE LIVE IN, IT’S SO EASY TO HOOK UP THE TRAILER AND GO!

Owning a boat or camper trailer is so exciting because of the endless fun activities you can do with these lifestyle accessories. However, when you own a boat or caravan, there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with towing your load interstate. We’ve written a blog full of handy and useful tips that you should be conscious of, before leaving on your next holiday.

Australian Towing Laws

The Transport and Main Roads Authority have three main compliance laws to ensure all drivers stay safe on the roads. These include:

  1. You must have an efficient brake system if your boat or trailer exceeds 750-kilograms. This brake system must operate on all wheels of at least one axel.
  2. A boat or trailer that exceeds 2 tonnes, must have the efficient brake system, as well as the ability to auto-lock in the event that it breaks away.
  3. A vehicle can only tow to the maximum capacity of the car model and the tow bar capacity.

Weight Distribution

Ensure the load of the trailer you are towing is evenly distributed because you don’t want to run the risk of one side tipping over.  Weight transfer exists, so it’s good to be conscious of your trailer load and preventing any future issues with steering and breaking.

Common Sense

It doesn’t matter if you are new to towing or an experienced driver, it’s important to stay conscious of your trailer size and clearance. Do not attempt to overtake vehicles that have warning signs (I.e. Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle, etc.) and be conscious of the amount of space between you and other vehicles. Spatial awareness will prevent you from getting into car accidents as well as any surrounding motorists.

Strap it or lose it

It’s best to avoid any accidents or losses by following a pre-check list that includes securing everything down on the inside and outside of your trailer. This includes fastening any ropes, materials and ensuring that everything is locked into place. By following these handy tips, you can avoid any costly damages to your own property and the safety of other drivers.
